Symbolism of Characters

Author's Note: This is my response to the short story called A Well-Lighted Place. I wrote about what the waiter's in the story and the cafe symbolize.

The young waiter would symbolize anger and death. Since the younger waiter was so annoyed with the old man and even told him that he should've killed himself even though the older man couldn't hear him it means he represents death. He represents anger because he got really mad at the old man and said a lot of mean things that he shouldn't have said to him. The younger waiter represents peace and a free spirit. Even though he was older he still had a way to stay positive and be nice to the man even though he really wanted to get home also. The cafe would represent happiness and a escape. For the older man the cafe seemed like a happy place for him a place that he knows almost as well as he knows his home. It's an escape for him an escape from real life a place where he could treat people with respect and where he can just be himself.
